It goes without saying that there are plenty of people who are disappointed that Sony’s next-generation portable console won’t be available in time for most people for the holidays. But Sony isn’t losing any sleep over the decision to wait until February 2012 to launch the Playstation Vita. The way John Koller sees it, the delay was a necessary marketing decision to ensure that enough PS Vitas are available for everyone who wants to buy one. Koller is the hardware marketing director for Sony.

“We’ve increased production materially since E3,” said Koller during an interview with All Things Digital, a U.S.-based website devoted to discussing technology. “We learned our lesson to make sure you have enough product.” He also brought up the fact that the Vita’s predecessor was also launched during the same time of the year. The PSP originally came out in March 2005 and sold nearly a million units on its first week.

The E3, or Electronic Entertainment Expo, is an annual video game conference in which developers put their software and hardware on display for consumers and other developers. The news comes as a let down for gamers who were hopeful that the Wii U would be launched shortly after the first quarter of next year.

The Wii U made its initial debut at the E3 2011 but received mixed reviews, mostly because an over-emphasis on the tablet-style controller left people trying to decide whether the touch screen device was a peripheral or a console. Also, a majority of the demos on display were just empty cases while the games were actually being played on developer kits. This time around, though, we should be seeing a finished product according to Iwata.
